*UPDATE July 2012* Thanks for all your comments and emails about robot crafts and costumes :)! Because the original robot supplies for these items are no longer available, I have designed my own free robot costume printable for you to enjoy :)! I have also put some fun robot craft kits for kids into my Etsy shop, Lovely Party Things. Click on the images below to see more :)!

I had so much fun planning Gabe’s robot-themed birthday party! We had the party at a local kids’ science museum called Sci-Quest. They offer a party package which includes having all the kids build their own robot, but it is meant for kids 8 years old and above. So I decided to just bring our own entertainment :).
When I first looked around for robot things I wasn’t too excited about anything I found, so I decided to do most of it on my own. The first thing I made was the invitation. I used a digital scrapbook paper for the background and I used some cool fonts for the design. The cute little robots I used are from a “dingbat” font called Tombots. The other main font I used was Destructo Beam BB. I kept the Photoshop version of the invite on file, and later used it as the basis for the bag toppers for the party favors and the robot crafts.

The party favor bags were placed inside kid-sized cups provided by Sci-Quest. I found the wind-up robots for the party favors at Target, but you can also get them at Oriental Trading. I found the robot crafts and stickers on sale at Michael’s. The robot craft came in a big box of 24, so I separated out the parts needed for each craft, put them in bags and put my little bag toppers on them. I had scanned the picture of the completed craft from the original craft box, and I included it on the bag toppers so the kids could see how to make the craft. They seemed to really like it!

I also had some robot mazes and robot coloring pages available for them to do. Gotta love free printable activity pages :)!
After they finished the crafts, they could have their picture taken in the robot photo stand – so cute :)! It was surprisingly easy to make – I just enlarged another robot coloring page I found to use as a template to cut the colored shapes out with. I also added some details to the front from a robot costume freebie I found online (the original robot printable is no longer available, so I designed my own for you. Click here for a free robot costume printable and tutorial) – I don’t know what I would have done with out all of these wonderful free printouts! I used that same printout to make mini robot costumes for the kids to wear during our robot games :). We played a robot freeze dance game, robot Simon says and robot red light green light. I was so surprised that Gabe didn’t want to wear a robot costume, but he still had fun because he got to be the one to start and stop the CD player for robot freeze and he directed the robots (his friends) during the other games. They looked like they were having so much fun :)! I love that one little friend wore a super cute robot T-shirt to the party too :)!

Another great idea I saw online was for robot-themed snacks, I saw some ideas here and here (this one includes more free printables)! You can see more of those awesome Tombots in use on my snack signs :). To make the robot table cover I just put down a plain white plastic tablecloth, then rolled out robot wrapping paper I found at Target to cover the top of the table, then topped it with a clear plastic tablecloth.

Luckily, there are lots of great resources online with ideas for food, games, crafts and of course the cake! Speaking of the cake, this was the first one I ever made for Gabe – my mother-in-law made the first two and I bought last year’s *gasp*! I admit it – I don’t love to make cakes. I would have bought one this year too, if I could have found a robot cake. But I couldn’t find anything, so when I saw this idea for a robot cake on the Betty Crocker site I decided to just go for it!

After the cake and presents, the real fun began for the kids when they finally got to go play in the museum. If you are planning on having a robot birthday party, I highly recommend having it at a children’s science museum! This was a great fourth birthday party for Gabe, hmmm… I wonder how I’m going to top this for next year’s party??

That was a blast – now to plan Julia’s first birthday party, which is less than a month away!!

My almost-two-year-old is 100% interested in robots, keeps singing “march march robots” from Yo Gabba Gabba! and every time he sees one, he goes “ROBOT!!!!!” So we figured having a robot-themed party for his 2nd would be great. We won’t be able to do a lot of the crafts that you can do for older children, but I think he’ll be really excited with all of the “robot stuff” around. Thank you so much for your ideas! Honestly, the only stuff I can find (that are worth-while) are moms like you who couldn’t find anything. I’m thinking I’ll show how I put his party together, so there’s one more out there! Thank you! (P.S. you’re totally on pinterest now) :)
I stumbled across your site, looking for more robot party food ideas. Like you, there wasn’t much as far as cakes or decorations. We had done a movie party a few years ago-Wall-E themed, so when Wall-E kept popping up for robot themed parties, I was disappointed. Thanks for making this site and sharing your ideas, as well as the resources that you used.

Thanks for sharing your blog. We are planning a robot party for our son’s 5th birthday. All your ideas look like things I can do. Thank you for the links and stores where you got your things as well.
I stumbled upon your site when searching for ideas for my son’s 2nd birthday which will be roboted themed! I love the signs for “computer chips” and “motor oil”…would you be willing to share the template? My fav. part is the robot border but I can’t find anything similar online!
Thanks so much!!!
L
Hi Leonor!
I’m sorry I cannot give you the templates for the signs, because I used digital scrapbooking papers by Shabby Princess (http://www.theshabbyshoppe.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=55) to make the background, which I cannot give out because they are copyrighted.
Don’t worry, The signs where easy to make, and both of the fonts I used were free! The robot border is made with a font called Tombots, which you can download for free here: http://fonts.tom7.com/fonts98.html (it’s about halfway down the page). To make the border, just type: CypsSYjzKmb using the Tombots font :)! The font used for the text was called Destructo Beam BB, which you can download for free right here: http://www.1001fonts.com/font_details.html?font_id=3024. If you’re using photoshop, you can use digital scrapbook paper as the background, or if you are using Word, you can just print your signs on white or colorful paper, then adhere them to a piece of cardstock for stability. I hope this helps!
I love all your robot party ideas! I am borrowing several ideas for my son’s 4th birthday. Can you tell me the recipe for your Nuts and Bolts? Thanks!
Hi Kathie, I’m so sorry I missed this question somehow! I didn’t really have a recipe for the Nuts and Bolts… I just threw together a bunch of snacks I thought the kids would like :)! I tried to use things that resembled robot parts, like pretzel sticks, Chex mix, Fruit Loops, etc.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas. Super creative!

Thanks for the cute ideas. I linked to your blog.
Thanks for the link – you did a fantastic job for your son’s party!!
You did such a great job! Thanks for linking to me, so courteous of you. :)
hi i was wondering how you made the lil costumes for the kids.. please let me know! thanks!
Sure! I just used sheets of poster board cut into quarters, one quarter for the front, one for the back (so I could make two costumes per poster board). I stapled strips (from another piece of poster board) to attach the two sides together at the shoulder. Then I just used clear contact sheets to adhere the robot gadget designs to the fronts and backs of the costumes. The original robot printable is no longer available, so I designed some new ones, which you can download here: http://lovelypartythings.com/2012/06/28/diy-robot-costume-printables-and-tutorial-free/. I printed them at home and cut them out. I recommend “Clear Cover self adhesive covering”, which I found at hobby Lobby. It is re-positionable and so easy to use, plus it makes the costumes more durable. After the party we donated the costumes to Gabe’s school so the kids can keep playing with them :)!
so the “clear cover self adhesive covering” is like you’re laminating the costume?!? i love your blog! thank you so much!
Love the robot costumes! I tried the link you posted but it didn’t work :( We are having a robot party for my son’s 1st birthday in May and would love to make these for all the kids!!
Thanks for letting me know, Candace! I have designed some to share, which you can find here: http://lovelypartythings.com/2012/06/28/diy-robot-costume-printables-and-tutorial-free/
