I have many fond memories of my mom singing to me and my brother and sisters when we were little. She knew how to play the guitar and wrote the lyrics and music to several songs. The song above is one that has often sprung to mind since I became pregnant with Gabriel. It is meaningful to me on so many levels. I can still remember the tune, even though it has been many years since I’ve heard my mom sing it. When I was a little girl, all I understood about the song was that it was about the love of a parent, but now I can see the true meaning behind the words.
Although I have wanted to share this song with you ever since Gabriel was a newborn (and I sang it to him), I knew that the week of Easter was the perfect time! As you can see, each part of the song is based on scripture. The chorus, based on Isaiah 49:15-16, is prophesy from the Old Testament about how Jesus would receive marks on his hands as a result of his crucifixion. The first verse, from John 1:12-13, describes how God adopts us as his own children when we receive him as our savior. Also based on John, verse 2 paints a beautiful picture of believers as sheep that follow Jesus as he protects them and gives them eternal life. And the final verse, from 1 Peter 1:3, brings us full circle in the Easter theme. Although Christ died and is forever “marked” because of our sin, his Father caused him to rise from the dead. Because of this we can have a rebirth, a new hope and a new life!
As a new mom, I know how deep and powerful my love is for little Gabe. This is what makes the Heavenly Father’s sacrifice of his only son seem so unfathomable and awesome to me. And his willingness to accept me, lowly me, as his own child shows that his love is more vast than I can ever know.

You did a beautiful job with the song, Jess. It is a precious song to me, and I am so blessed knowing it is for you also. I wrote it before I had any children, but when I needed to know how deep God’s love was for me and how secure I was in Him. I would love to pass it on to Sarah and her musical friends for a flute arrangement and even more!Love, Mom
I need to have Mom sing that for me again! I don’t remember the melody, but wouldn’t it be fun to record it with some flute and guitar maybe? Thanks for sharing that Jess…
